This is one of my earlier paintings informed by the biblical account of the Tower of Babel (Genesis 11) incorporating Pieter Bruegel’s painting, The Tower of Babel (1567). The top half symbolizing “the city of God” has language references, blueprints and Farsi text inscribed into the beeswax above the tower, “The Word became flesh.” The lower half symbolizing the “city of man”contains black and white photos that I took on a trip to NYC, and a sign that reads”the center of the universe.”
City of God/ City of Man is the title of St Augustine’s book where he discusses the end of two cities, the earthly city and the heavenly city.
