• gessoed panels (12’ x 12” or smaller or larger) preferred but you may work on canvas. The smooth hard surface IS best for cold wax. Birch cradled panels are available at most art supply stores. If transporting them is a challenge bring flat panels or gessoed watercolor paper. (use regular acrylic gesso for covering panels. Encaustic gesso is not necessary as there is no heat involved in adhering the cold wax medium.)

• oil paints: a primary palette and earth colors like raw umber, burnt sienna and burnt umber, and gorgeous chemical colors like Quinacridone Gold or Quinacridone Violet and Titanium white.

• powdered pigments  – whatever you want to add to your palette. There are expensive pigments like Chrysocolla and common pigments like Burnt Sienna.

• cold wax medium  ( Dorlands or Gamblin)

• palette knives (at least two) for mixing paint and cold wax

• oil sticks – just one or two of your favorite colors and a white (pale yellow)

• flexible scraping tools/ dough scraper (by Wilton- has a soft edge.)

• paper palette (large) white paper palettes are disposable waxy paper to be used specifically for mixing colors

• brayers

• drawing needles and tools (I use my clay tools)

• string, lace, and things to add texture — cardboard, dead leaves and twigs, stencils, rags, wax paper

• blue masking tape to protect sides of a cradled panel

• personal images that “speak to you” or poetry, prose, and words that inspire you – your “narrative.”
