This painting references The Incarnation. Jesus is the Suffering Servant, who entered time and space to die and redeem all hate and grief and death, is well acquainted with our sorrow and pain. In this painting, he is buried in the dark earth below. His mouth is agape in sorrow, and 40 tally marks surround him representing — the time of earthly sufferring.
Above him, in the heavens, the Father welcomes him home to glory. There is a golden needle descending from above, which references the God who descended “to stitch the human breach.” (see ADVENT by Suzanne Rhodes below.)
ADVENT
Through the needle’s eye the rich man came
Squeezing through stars of razor light
that pared his body down to thread.
Gravity crushed his heart’s chime
and his breath that breathed out worlds
now flatted as fire between walls.
The impossible slit
stripped him
admitting him
to stitch the human breach.
