This painting began with a newspaper image about HU – The Human Element.” embedded at the bottom of this piece. To me, it suggested the postmodern belief that humans are merely material—just another element on the periodic table of elements. My painting reflects instead on the Incarnation and The Word who spoke creation into being by water. (2Peter 3:5)
And inspired by John 1: “In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. All things were made by him. The WORD became flesh (became a human element) and lived among us and walked on water. He rules the seas and all the elements it contains. He brings life out of death.

The top part of the figure is made up of words/breath and the Name of God. It evokes both the mystery of matter and the miracle of grace.
