He Has Taken Captive His Captives
36 x 48 inches
oil and wax and papers on canvas

This piece began as a demo for a workshop before Good Friday. ( See my blog post about it.)
The top of the painting alludes to the God whose “throne is the heavens,” Isaiah 66:1 and repeated in Acts 7: 49-50.
As the injustice and the human condition play itself out on earth, “The LORD sits enthroned forever, he has established his throne for justice,” Psalm 9:7.
To the side of the figure is a slash of gold leaf which is repeated below symbolizing the Incarnation as well as his sword of justice on earth as a warrior King. His right arm is exposed and this importantly references the Scriptures. Psalm 44 and Isaiah 30:30 “The LORD will cause his majestic voice to be heard and the descending blow of his arm to be seen, in furious anger…”
The injustices on the earth such as the January 6th captives being “commemorated” on the capitol steps scene bottom right as well as those religious leaders who sentenced Jesus to death will one day be made right. The blood of the cucifixion is central to this piece. And through this sacrifice, Jesus will take captive his captives and give gifts to men.”
“You ascended on high, leading a host of captives in your train and receiving gifts among men…” Psalm 68:18
“Revive Thy work O LORD. . .Thy mighty arm make bare.”
