Burial / The Deposition
24 x 24 inches
Oil, wax, paper and gold on panel
This painting was inspired by Caravaggio’s, “The Deposition of Christ” reproduced in the top left corner. Like Christ’s “deposit” into the ground at death when he left heaven’s glory to take on human flesh, so too our human bodies (referenced by the central falling figure) will die. Our burial or deposit. of these vessels of clay await the day of resurrection and new creation. Like Christ, the first fruits of the resurrection (I Corinthians 15:20ff), our bodies will be resurrected to new life.
BURIAL portrays Christ’s death but also our spiritual burial in Christ and our hope of resurrection in his resurrection!
“We were buried therefore with him by baptism into death, in order that, just as Christ was raised from the dead by the glory of the Father, we too might walk in newness of life. For if we have been united with him in a death like his, we shall certainly be united with him in a resurrection like his.” Romans 6:4-5
That we may know Jesus and the power of his resurrection, and also the fellowship of his suffering.
