Parachute Dummies
oil/cold wax/ gold leaf on canvas
40 x 40 inches
In a age of drone warfare, I discovered World War II parachute test dummies on a web site called Obsolete. They were a haunting images of man’s broken condition, a man who continues to wage war.
But this painting is about God’s grace for our broken human condition. For this reason, I embellished the central figure with gold leaf like an icon. The three central images, Three Graces, are manipulated images of these parachute test dummies, and over these I drew the charcoal figure of a Chinese man.
The random asemic mark I made in the oil and wax top left “happened” to be the Chinese word for fly. But for the grace of God we will not fly.
