The Final Battle (Elegy to the Spanish Republic)
oil on canvas with Motherwell stamp
36 x 36 inches
2013
This painting began with a stamp of the work of Abstract Expressionist artist, Robert Motherwell, attached to the surface. The dark circular shapes of the Motherwell painting called, “Elegy To the Spanish Republic” was painted as a “lamentation or funeral song” after the Spanish Civil War. Motherwell was attracted to “automatism.” Ironically my “automatic” painting repeats the circular shapes in his painting. Both are about a “battle.” Mine is “The Final Battle, of Christ defeating Satan by his death by crucifixion. Looking down one sees not only the circular thorn-crowned head of Christ, but The Pearl of Great Price.
