Jacob wrestled with God before he crossed into Canaan. Here, at place named Peniel--the face of God, God changed Jacob's name to Israel.
Jacob means man strives; Israel means, God strives. Jacob the deceiver now recognized that it is God who blesses and controls his life.
Psalm 46 begins with the text,
"God is our refuge and strength,
a very present help in trouble.
Therefore we will not fear
though the earth should change
and though the mountains slip
into the heart of the sea...The God of Jacob is my strength."
